Bamboo Shoot

Bamboo shoots, with crunchy texture, it’s the perfect ingredient in stir fries dishes, soups and other dishes. They have a very mild taste but they accept the flavors of other foods easily and can blend into almost any cuisine.  Bamboo shoots are healthy ingredients in your dishes as they are low in fat and calories, but contain lots of fiber and potassium.

How to choose a good bamboo shoot?

First Consideration

When you slightly press the bamboo shoot, it should not feel soft and the flesh sinks in. It means that it will not be crunchy. 

Second Consideration

Look out for uneven cuts, which means that a bad portion of the bamboo shoots is cut off before packing for sale by the manufacturer.

Third Consideration

Look out for rough surfaces, which means the bamboo shoot is old. Choose those with smooth surfaces for more crunchy.

How do you store bamboo shoots when you get home? 
It’s recommended to store the bamboo shoots in the fridge if you are not using it immediately, to maintain its freshness and to prevent it from turning bad in singapore hot weather. You can store the bamboo shoots in the fridge for up to 2 weeks if you cannot finish all of it in one go.

Preparatory methods 
Remember to boil the bamboo shoots in water to remove the bitterness and natural toxins. After boiling in water, you can let it cool and after that cut into thin slices. Now you are ready to whip up a delicious dish with bamboo shoots.  

Important Note!  
Raw bamboo shoots are known to contain natural toxins, cyanogenic glycosides. But it can easily be removed by boiling the bamboo shoots in water. The poached bamboo shoots will taste better and cook faster.  In addition, the bamboo shoots tha SGDriedGoods carry are already soaked in water, and we replace them with clean tap water when we are displaying in the store to be sold.

It’s sold per piece, and we do not cut them into small pieces to retain its freshness. If you need a smaller piece, please let us know and we will gladly choose it for you. There’s also bamboo shoots in a can, but we recommend the fresh bamboo shoot!

Some favourite dishes 
As bamboo shoots only has a mild taste, it’s favour will not cover the other ingredients. And to enjoy the crunchiness, it’s best to stir fry it with other ingredients. A nice dish is stir fry bamboo shoots with seafood, meat, mushrooms.
