Did you Know?

  • Malva Nut is also known as Pong Tai Hai, 澎大海, Pang Tai Hai 胖大海 which literally means FAT BIG SEA. 
  • When soaked water, it can swell up to 8 times its original volume to form a gel. The inner flesh absorbs the water, breaks through the skin and bloats into a jelly form, like gel. 
  • We only use the seeds of the malva nut. They are the size of an adult's fingertip, are brown and have coarse skin.
  • It is used as an ingredient for desert CHENG TNG 清汤, often negligible as it appears as a floating brownish substance.   
  • When used in traditional chinese medicine (TCM), it’s good for treating sore throat and cough due to heatiness, and helps to relax the bowels.

Malva Nut Health Benefits

It can be prescribed as TCM treatment for dry cough, sore throat and constipation due to its cooling nature. Since in TCM taste is often a key determinant of the action of the herbs in the body,  malva nuts are said to slow down acute reactions and detoxify the body specifically targeting the large intestines and lungs.  

What does it Taste Like?

After soaking, the mala nut expands into a gel/jelly like texture. It has no particular taste, hence it is often added to desert. 

Where to Buy Pang Da Hai in Singapore?

It is not commonly found in supermarkets but fret not because we carry them in loose form, so you can choose the quantity you need. 

Preparatory Methods 

Malva nuts can be easily prepared by soaking it in room temperature water for about 20 mins. After it has expanded, remove the outer layer skin and seed kernel in the center. After that it can be used. 

Important Note! 

Due to its cooling nature, it is not suitable for pregnant women and not suitable to consume in huge quantities. 

Ways to enjoy Malva Nut

  1. In dessert, where commonly known as CHENG TNG 清汤 in Singapore. 
  2. As a TCM remedy to sore throat, soak 2 to 3 pieces of  Malva nut in water, and consume it as a tea. Note that it is not recommended to consume in large quantities and over a long period. If in doubt, please consult a professional TCM practitioner.
